It seems over the past few years that dementia is becoming an ever increasing problem in the elderly. The label dementia is used to cover a host of symptoms that can occur when parts of the brain become affected by certain illnesses and conditions. This includes Alzheimer’s and strokes. The symptoms are many but best known are loss of memory, problems with speech, personality change, confusion and issues with understanding.
Conventional medicines used to treat dementia are powerful and have very unpleasant side effects which can often lead to physical deterioration alongside the problems with dementia.
In Holland there are promising results from some research on light therapy and its affects on dementia in 12 nursing homes across Holland. Scientists found that those treated with light therapy experienced fewer depression related symptoms as a result of the treatment.
The experiment was carried out on 200 elderly people, mainly female and the results were positive showing a 19% reduction of symptoms relating to depression. It was also found that just over 50% began to do more for themselves for example buttering bread. It was also noted that loss of brain function decreased slightly.
Eus van Someran, part of the research team said:
‘Patients with dementia get all sorts of medication with unpleasant side-effects. Lots of light achieves the same result without those side-effects.’
