Posted under Shiatsu - Sep 7th, 08

Shiatsu is regulated as part of the medical therapy under the regulations of Japans ministry of health. There is also the Derivative Shiatsu that incorporates the Japanese massage and the western style. Both therapies are hands on and use the anatomy and physiological theories. To become a trained Shiatsupractor the person would have trained for three years and completed 2200 hours of educational programming at one of the universities. Japans University was founded by Tokujiro Namikoshi in 1940 to teach the simple techniques of shiatsu.

The story is told in Japan how Tokujiro Namikoshi at the age of seven years old would sit and press his mother’s body with his thumbs and palms to try and relieve the pain from the suffering of rheumatoid arthritis; this was how Shiatsu was born.

Many times the practitioner was asked to heal celebrities and prime ministers in Japan and other countries which helped the shiatsu technique become well known.

Shiatsu is a manipulation of the growth of a person’s body and combined with the mind and intuition it can affect the body’s movements and flexibility. The emphasis is on diagnosing the posture and correct breathing.

The practitioner will help by stretching the body and using their weight to help the body by encouraging the energy and circulation to improve which results in a more flexible body so a person looks and feels healthy.
