Massage involves the practitioner stroking and kneading the soft tissues of the body with differing levels of pressure. This massaging of the skin and muscles is an important part of some traditional healing systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda herbalism. Practices such as reflexology and aromatherapy also use massage along with essential oils to treat illnesses therapeutically.
The action of massage triggers the release of endorphins. These are the body’s ‘feel good’ chemicals which create a sense of relaxation and well being. Massage generates this reaction by stimulating the central nervous system through the nerve endings in the skin. The endorphins counter the effects of stress inducing chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline. Stress is released as the heart rate slows, respiration eases and blood pressure starts to drop.
Vigorous massage is used to improve blood circulation and assist the lymphatic system in eliminating waste products and toxins. It is very effective at easing stiff, knotted muscles and increasing the movement and flexibility of joints. Other benefits include improvement of the function of the digestive system. Massage of the abdomen helps the intestines eliminates waste efficiently and the detoxification processes of the liver are improved strengthening the body. This is also true of the urinary system. The elimination process is accelerated and the body will pass urine more frequently to pass toxins out of the system.
