Music therapy is used to treat a wide array of illnesses including cognitive and emotional issues. A large amount of research has been carried out to try and understand why music therapy has such a powerful positive reaction in patients. Results differ depending on the application and technique used.
This extensive research has been carried out in various health care areas and has been found to have outstanding results in some of the most challenging illnesses there are to treat. Even the most difficult patients can respond well, although some benefits were only temporary. A good example of this is when music therapy has been used to treat Alzheimer’s sufferers. Alzheimer’s patients suffer from social behaviour issue, cognitive function decline, and motor function issues. Patients are exposed to three different techniques of music therapy – verbally cued reminiscence, musically cued reminiscence and musical activity.
Although musical and verbally cued reminiscence achieved good results it was the musical activity that increased the brain function and language ability most dramatically. Music activities include using songs to stimulate recognition and discussion and it has been found it can also increase cognitive scores.
It can also be used successfully to help patients manage pain. This is due to the brain perceiving the sensation of pain and music in the same way. Music can be used to negate the pain vibrations which can reduce if not eliminate the brain’s perceptions of pain.
