The Alexander Technique was developed to teach people how to use their bodies efficiently and effectively to avoid bad posture and habits causing issues in the future. As a baby and young child we naturally use our bodies in the most effective manor to use our muscles in a way that takes the least effort and places the least strain on our joints. However as we grow into adults we develop poor posture and bad habits that put pressure on our muscles and joints and can then develop into serious issues in the future.
Alexander Technique lessons are usually carried out on a one-to-one basis and can last between 30 and 45 minutes. The teacher gently corrects muscular imbalances and slowly helps the body to realign. Initially patients may feel strange ad find the new positions and ways of holding their body feels unnatural. However with daily practice it soon become second nature and the body is re-educated to move and stand in the most efficient and beneficial way.
Poor posture can lead to difficulties with breathing as the throat ad diaphragm can become restricted. Breathing is another important element in the Alexander Technique and again students are taught how to breathe most effectively.
This technique was developed by Frederick Alexander, an Australian actor who had always suffered from respiratory issues as a young child. This affected his voice and limited his career in the theatre. He realized that this was due to muscular tension in his body and began to study his posture in mirrors slowly correcting it. His voice problem was cured and he began to teach the method to others.
