If you attend an Ashtanga yoga session the Ujjay breathing technique will be familiar to you.
I have listed four basic techniques of Ujjay or fire breathing as it is more commonly known as.
1. Sit in a quiet peaceful room that allows you to concentrate on what you are doing.
2. Take a full breath whilst tightening the muscles around the throat area. This should cause a hissing sound. If not try again.
3. Breathe out gently while still focusing on the muscles being tight around the throat. If you are doing this correctly you should sound like Dark Vaider from Star Wars with his mask on.
4. Take six breaths before having a rest. Once you are familiar with the procedure and how it should feel and sound, this cycle of breaths can be done four times daily. Take a short break between each repetition.
Most of us take breathing and posture for granted and slip in to some bad habits and you become used to shallow breathing which can lead to feelings of dizziness at times.
Ashtanga yoga has the movements to encourage balance of the mental and physical energy whilst correct breathing will enhance your energy levels.
