Yoga for Anxiety

Posted under Yoga - Jun 26th, 08

If you suffer from anxiety you may be cheered to hear that researchers in the States reckon that anxious people could live longer.  They have come to this conclusion based on the fact that anxiety-plagued women tended to outlive their less stressed counterparts.  Rsearchers believe that those with great anxiety levels became more health conscious as a result and therefore kept fit and active.

However experiencing anxiety isn’t pleasant.  Here’s some tips to reduce anxious moments:

Tackle head on those things that worry you!  By confronting anxiety causing situations you can dramatically reduce your stress levels.  Start by picturing yourself tackling them first and then move up to tackling them in reality.

Limit the amount of time you allow yourself to worry.  Try to keep it to thirty minutes a day maximum.  Don’t dwell on things that haven’t happened yet, focus on the here and now.

Calm yourself using depp breathing techniques.  Yoga and exercise are also great anxiety busters.  When you are feeling very anxious hit the gym, yoga class or simply take 10 deep breaths.  Alternatively try a relaxation technique – starting at your feet clench eat muscle from the feet upwards.  Hold each one for a few moments and release. Breathe deeply and visualize your worries being exhaled.  By the time you get to your head you’ll feel completely relaxed.
